The End of Year Survey: Looking Back Through the Year
BY THE SPECTRUM STAFF
Favorite Memories
“I loved how every week, everyone could just sit down and work on their articles while eating store-bought cookies and pretzels, simultaneously working on their articles. The members of The Spectrum were all really welcoming when I joined at the beginning of my sophomore year. Whenever I would have rough days, they were always there to offer great advice.” — Belle Hu ’22
“Every time Jasmine squawks over her unfinished (*ahem* unstarted) article” — Rebecca Zhang ’22
“The time I brought a cake to layout week (I think for winter issue) and we (not so secretly) munched on it in the Mac lab 0_0. 'Twas the peak of salutary neglect and all things sweet at the venerated Spectrum snack table.” — Olivia Hu ’22
“Trying to make a good mockup; it’s not so much a good memory from this year, rather a dream I will forever chase.” — Anjali Raman ’20
“I can't remember what the article was about, but it was during one of those meetings where I'd start off talking with Jasmine, Rebecca, Belle, Sophie—you know, someone in the 233S computer lab front row about an article. Naturally, we'd get so deep in a rabbit hole and I would end up calling Serena, Michael, Anjali—and Michelle and Anushka later too. It doesn't seem like much, but in the moment, there'd be this amazing flow of ideas that really reveals the combined power of journalism and our education. Moments like those defy the stereotype that makes underclassmen fear upperclassmen, and upperclassmen mock underclassmen; admittedly, the sophomores said they were scared of us, but more so because of our knowledge, and they still grew comfortable bouncing ideas off the EICs. I got a firsthand glimpse of gears turning in each and every one of our brains, and an interpersonal connection with writers that I never expected I'd get as an EIC.” — Kirtana Krishnakumar ’20
“Destroying Michael’s article in Back-to-School” -- Amber Li ’20
“HANGING WITH MY LAYOUT KIDS AND FELLOW BOSS, AMBER LI! Also vandalizing Spec for April Fool's” -- Emily Zhao ’20
