Letter from the EICs
BY MICHELLE GONG '21 & ANUSHKA WANI '21
As we leave behind the train-wreck that was 2020, we’re eager for a fresh start. Though we know January 1st doesn’t magically hit a reset button and erase our health, political, and social justice struggles, we see the new year as an opportunity to transition into less turbulent times.
Quite fittingly, we decided to focus on Transitions for our Winter Issue. From a new president to Pfizer vaccines, we’re certainly facing a year of adaptation. Writers rose to the challenge of tackling such issues as well as contemplating the aftermath of transitions we’ve already experienced, from climate change driving society towards clean energy to the pandemic harming our mental health.
Though progress has already been made, change is gradual and requires our continued effort. The Spectrum members felt and continue to feel saddened and frustrated by the racial incident that took place during last month’s school committee meeting. While we wish we could forget 2020, we have to remember the struggles of Black citizens in order to create a more inclusive community.
2021 will only be a repeat of 2020 if we grow complacent. And yet, knowing this, our weary and desperate senior souls just want to say: 2021, please be good to us.
